8 Tips To Get More Video Views

June 13, 2019

The video you’ve been working on over the past while is finally finished and you can’t wait to post it online, sit back, and wait for it to go viral. Except, it’s not getting millions of views. In fact, it’s only been seen by 20 people. So what happened? Why did this marketing effort fall short?

When it comes to video content, there are a few things you need to know to ensure your video gets in front of your target audience. Bear with us, as at first, these tips may seem basic, but it’s important to know that even the most experienced marketers can miss the mark on these seemingly trivial steps that are the key to a video’s success.

Tip #1 - Create Great Content. Obvious, right? Yet time and time again, brands fall short. Usually this is because they forget the “why”. What is the purpose of this video? Is it to sell something? Spark awareness? Or maybe to educate and inform? Whatever the reason, good video content is planned, not treated as an afterthought.

Tip #2 - Upload it to YouTube. In 2006 Google bought YouTube, and as such, Google tends to favor videos pushed to YouTube, meaning these videos will appear higher on the Google search results page. Vimeo is another popular video sharing site that can also be utilized to spread the reach of your video that much further.

Tip #3 - Pick a Great Title. It needs to be highly relevant to the content in the video, while also being engaging. What could you name your video that would entice someone to choose it from a sea of other options? This is where you can get creative and have some fun, try to think outside the box and come up with something new and fresh.

Tip #4 - Create a Brief Description. The words used in the description will also help with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rankings, and help people find your content. It's crucial that any key terms relevant to the video are included.

Tip #5 - Tag Your Video. Tagging your video with relevant keywords will continue to help people find it. Try to include lots of relevant terms people may use when searching. Not just the terms that you immediately think of, but also those that others may search for when looking for content on the topic.

Tip #6Include Closed Captioning. By including captions or subtitles you make your video more accessible. Not only will this help increase your audience base, but you are also adding to your SEO rankings if you then associate these keywords and terms with your video. YouTube makes this easy with a click of a button, so utilize it.

Tip #7 – Use an Interesting Thumbnail. Don’t use the default thumbnail. Instead pick an image that will draw the viewer in, something colorful and full of action.  You can even custom brand your thumbnail for more engagement.

Tip #8 – Share It!.  YouTube and Vimeo make their video links highly shareable. With just a few clicks, you can have your video posted on over 10 different social sites. And if someone is really feeling your content, they can also easily subscribe.

Like anything else, marketing video is a lot of trial and error. Take note of the videos that get more attention than others and don’t be afraid to switch out a thumbnail, add some tags, or even update your video title to spark more engagement. And at the end of the day, have fun with it.

Never miss a post.
